Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital now offers advanced robotic technology for hip and knee replacements
Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital is one of the first in the St. Charles region to provide total hip, knee, and partial knee replacement surgery using a robotic-arm assisted device, ensuring more precise bone removal and implant placement.
The innovative robotic technology allows surgeons to personalize procedures to each patient. Patients often experience less pain and recover faster.
Before surgery, the robotic arm device uses sensors, cameras, and software algorithms to help surgeons identify what size implant a patient will need, and how it should be implanted based on each patient’s unique anatomy. During surgery, the robotic arm is used to guide the precise placement of implants to optimize the range of motion, stability, and alignment. The surgery is completed with a single incision, minimizing the risk of infection, and reducing recovery time.
The accuracy of this technology makes it ideal for joint replacement surgeries and allows surgeons to quickly adjust alignment or implant placement during surgery, if needed. Post-surgery scans can also be done with the robotic arm to ensure the implants are in place correctly.
Provides each patient with a personalized surgical plan
Minimizes bone and soft tissue damage
Reduces pain and the need for pain medication
Shortens hospital stay
Decreases physical therapy requirements after surgery
While the robotic arm provides several benefits, BJC surgeons are always there to oversee the care of the patient.
Patients suffering from severe joint pain or stiffness, such as osteoarthritis, can benefit from this treatment option. Surgery is often an option when symptoms have not been relieved with techniques such as bracing, medication, or supplements.
